Text: John 17:1-8 | Series: John 12-21

Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You.

We “hear” the Lord’s intimate prayer to the Father in this chapter. He was praying for Himself  (John 17:1 – 5), for His disciples (v 6-19) and for all believers (v 20-26) .

He began by asking the Father to glorify Him and for Him to glorify the Father (v 1-3). What does this mean?

John 17:1-5 gives us some clues. We see Jesus receiving glory in the following context:

  1. Eternity past (v 5, 24)
  2. Earthly ministry (v 4, 6)
  3. Climax of the Cross
  4. Ascension & Second Coming
  5. Through the Church

In the passage, the Lord tells us that He is the One who gives us eternal and He celebrates the gift of salvation with us.

We have eternal life because God has given authority to Jesus to rescue us and to lead us to eternal life. And what is eternal life but to know Christ and to rest in His glorious initiative.

Let us then pursue eternal life, starting today, “that you may know me and continue to know me…the only true God”.
