Text: 2 Chronicles 23-24 | Series: 1 & 2 Chronicles

In 2 Chronicles 23-24, we follow the story of Joash, the 7th king of Judah, which starts off with “good news” before turning into “bad news”. This sermon will then help us to relate this sad story from 2 Chronicles to the “better news” of Jesus Christ.

Queen Athaliah Assumes the Throne

At the end of Chapter 22, Athaliah wrongfully assumes the throne as queen after the death of her son the king. She begins her reign by ordering the execution of the entire royal line, which was her grandchildren (22:10)! However, God kept a rightful heir to the throne of Judah safe by hiding one of the grandchildren, Joash, from Athaliah.

King Joash Made King

After six years, Jehoiada, the priest whose family had been caring for Joash, initiates his plan to put Joash on the throne. With the support of the people, Athalaia was overthrown and put to death. Joash’s reign as king begins with a huge celebration and for many years Judah experiences God’s blessings of wise leadership, the restoration of temple worship, and unity among the people.

Death of Jehoiada the Priest

The “bad news” begins with the death of Jehoiada the priest (24:15). Soon afterward, Joash and Judah begin to worship false gods. God sent prophets to warn Judah but the people would not listen. Finally, through Jehoiada’s son, Zechariah, God tells Judah, “Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has forsaken you.” They respond by killing the messenger, Zechariah! Chapter 24 ends with the LORD delivering Judah to military defeat and the assassination of Joash.
