Marriage Part 2 – Wives Who Honor Their Husbands (Eph 5:22-24)

(For accuracy of this transcript, please refer to video and audio file)

Well, good morning, once again. I’m going to invite you to open your bibles to the Book of Ephesians. Ephesians chapter five, where we will be studying together this morning as God’s people.

If we were to take a survey of the ICMK members, I think we’d come up with some very different answers regarding the family backgrounds that we all come from. Some of you come from a, a wonderful family. You can remember a father and mother loving each other and loving you as children. Others of us come from not so good of a family background. You remember your parents quarrelling, maybe there was abuse in the home; maybe there was divorce. Some of you had a dad who was in charge, and your mom was maybe okay with that, or maybe your mom wasn’t so okay with that. Others of us come from backgrounds where it was clear that mom was in control, and dad was mostly silent. We come from very different backgrounds, and our backgrounds affect the way we then hear the bible, when the bible talks to us about marriage, about families. Not to mention the effect that our various cultural backgrounds have on us as well. Some of us come from countries where it’s very normal for the husband to lead the wife, for the wife to follow. Others of us come from countries, especially in the 21st century, where that just sounds sexist. We’ve been raised to believe that there is no difference at all between men and women, and, and husbands and wives should have exactly the same kind of roles in marriage. And so depending on where you come from and the society in which you were raised, this also affects the way you hear the bible, when it talks about marriage.
