Who is our God? – Law Giver (Exodus 19-24)

(For accuracy of this transcript, kindly refer to video or audio file)

Good morning again, church family. We invite you to turn in your Bible to the Book of Exodus. Exodus is the second book of the Bible, right after Genesis, and as we continue in our series, we’re going to start in Exodus, chapter 19, this morning. I attended college in the city of Chicago and I remember one evening I attended a social gathering on the rooftop of one of the dormitories. I think it was about a 10-story building, right next to a 13-story building on one side, an a 19-storey building on the other. The rooftop was flat, there were picnic tables in an open area for mingling and surrounding most of the roof, there was a guard rail, a fence for safekeeping. There was only one place that lacked the guard rail, it was over by the stairwell. The stairs came up in a self-enclosed little room with walls and a door and it’s own little roof, and there was a sign posted, “No Climbing”. My buddies and I thought it might be kind of fun to try it out, just to jump up really quick when no one was looking run across and hop down to the ledge on the other side, so I decided I would be the first to try it. I climbed up and started running over, and then right before I was about to slide down to the ledge, something stopped me and praise God it did, for we were misinformed, there was no ledge on the other side, just a 10-storey drop all the way down to the narrow alley between the two buildings. There was a purpose to the no climbing sign. It was placed there for our good, even if we didn’t understand it or accept it. This morning, we’re going to consider that God is a law giver and that this is a very good thing and how foolish it is when we ignore the laws that he has given us.
