Learning from the Past (Numbers 32-33)

(For accuracy of this transcript, kindly refer to video file and audio file)

Perhaps you’re familiar with the famous quote by British statesman Winston Churchill. He said, “Those who failed to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Now, Churchill was probably borrowing this idea from the Spanish philosopher George Santayana, who a few decades prior to Churchill had stated, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” I think these statements are self-explanatory, no doubt they’re true. There’s much wisdom in them and yet this wisdom predates these 20th century leaders. It’s a wisdom that’s found, thousands of years earlier in the word of God and Scripture. God regularly calls his people to remember what he has done, to remember what previous generations of believers have gone through. Scripture regularly calls us to learn from the past. I think that’s a good way to summarize what we find this morning in our continuing series of the book of Numbers. As we come to chapters 32 & 33, we’re going to summarize this lesson in two ways.
